When you’re touring Bohol, one of the most popular tourist destination is the animal sanctuary where the very famous Prony the Python is located which is somewhere in the Municipality of Baclayon.
Prony was 5 feet long and 5 kilograms heavy when she was captured last October 31, 1996, somewhere in Albuquerque, about 3 kilometers away from it’s current home. When she died, she was 27 feet and weighted almost 300 kilograms. She could have been the world’s largest captive reticulated python, but unfortunately, she failed to be officially recorded by Guiness because it’s a requirement that the creature should be alive during the bid for official record. Prony’s body is well preserved and is still being one of the center attractions in the animal sanctuary.
My workmates, both from Manila and Cebu, planned a visit to the said sanctuary as part of our Bohol escapade. Even though she’s already dead, we can’t help but be amazed by how long she is! It is said that she eats 2 pigs for a meal. Imagine that!
Currently, Prony is now being replaced by Prony 2 which is a Burmese python. She’s not as long as Prony yet, but who knows, she might even surpass Prony.
Prony left some babies before she died, when she mated with Yohan, an Albino python. Yohan must have been so nice to Prony, that’s why they are blessed with little babies. Some of the little pythons currently in the animal sanctuary are Yohan and Prony 2’s kids.
My colleagues were too afraid to mingle with the pythons, especially Yohan. It seems that I was the only one with a brave soul to hug and kiss the snake hehe.
My teammate Al was trying to take a selfie show with Yohan, but he can’t help but be afraid even though I am carrying the snake.
Speaking of the babies, we also took the chance to meet them. One of them actually kissed me in the cheek! Sweet, isn’t it?
It wasn’t my first time to visit the said animal sanctuary, but I am still in awe at how long these pythons are! I thought that snakes as big as Prony are to be afraid of because with their size, they can actually swallow a human being! But pythons are one of the most friendly snale breeds in the world and I never imagined how charming and adorable they are. I wanted to witness how they actually eat their meal, but too bas these pythons are full when we visited. Maybe next time 🙂
